## Creating a Synthetic Filesystem Backup Destination

{% hint style="info" %}
**Note:**

* To create a new storage unit (or use an existing one) you can use [Power Protect DD Storage Unit Creator](#power-protect-dd-storage-unit-creator)
* See How to setup [DD Boost FS Plugin](/backup-destinations/deduplication-appliances/dell-emc-data-domain.md#dd-boost-fs-plugin). (Do not set up an additional Backup Destination! You just need to follow the instructions regarding boostFS and storage unit setup)
  {% endhint %}

1. Go to **Backup Destinations → File System**.
2. Click **Create Backup Destination → File System (Synthetic)**.
3. Configure the destination as described for a regular filesystem backup destination, selecting **DD Boost** as the **Storage Backend**.
4. Provide the Data Domain connection details or use [Power Protect DD Storage Unit Creator](#power-protect-dd-storage-unit-creator)
   * **Host:** Hostname or IP address of the Data Domain server.
   * **Account name** and **Password:** Credentials used to access Data Domain.
   * **Storage unit:** Name of the Data Domain storage unit.
   * **Storage path:** Path used to store backups.
5. If the Data Domain mount path differs from the backup destination path, enable **Data Domain is mounted to a different directory than backup destination path** and specify the appropriate **Storage path** and **DD mount path**.
6. Save the configuration.

{% hint style="info" %}
***Note:***

* The **Storage path** must be inside the **DD mount path**.
* The **DD mount path** (or **Storage path**, in case only a **Storage path** is set) must point to the mount point of boostFS with the corresponding Storage Unit (see setting up boostFS).
  {% endhint %}

### Power Protect DD Storage Unit Creator

The wizard guides you through configuring a PowerProtect DD storage unit for use as a backup destination. You can create a new user and storage unit or select existing ones.

Before starting, prepare the following:

* PowerProtect DD hostname or IP address.
* Administrator username and password.

Follow the wizard to configure the user and storage unit. When completed, the wizard automatically populates the corresponding fields in the backup destination form.

### Retention lock

Retention Lock protects backups against modification and deletion for a specified number of days.

To use this option, enable Retention Lock on the PowerProtect DD storage unit and configure it in **Manual** mode. The retention period configured in Storware Backup & Recovery must fall within the minimum and maximum retention periods permitted by the storage unit.
